Film screenings highlight feminist and historical cinema in Spain and Paraguay

Various film screenings are scheduled to highlight historical and feminist cinema. In Huesca, Spain, the film ‘La Souriante Madame Beudet’ (1923), directed by Germaine Dulac, will be projected on September 25 at the Museo de Huesca. As a pioneer of feminist cinema, the silent film explores the internal life and desires of a woman trapped in an unloving marriage. The event features live original music by Ro Rapoport and is part of the XXVI Huesca Women's Film Festival.

In Paraguay, the ‘Cine de Barrio’ venue will host a screening of the 1961 American drama ‘The Children's Hour’ (La calumnia) on September 16 as part of the ‘Historias prohibidas’ cycle. Directed by William Wyler and starring Audrey Hepburn, the film addresses social stigma and lesbianism through the story of two teachers whose lives are destroyed by a malicious rumor. The film was notable for being one of the first Hollywood productions to tackle such themes following the relaxation of the Hays Code.
