John Irvin, British director of ‘Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy’, dies at 86

British film director John Irvin has died at the age of 86. According to his producers, Irvin passed away peacefully at home on August 11, surrounded by his family.

Irvin enjoyed a prolific career spanning over five decades, during which he directed more than 30 films and television projects. He was widely recognized for his versatility, working across documentaries, television dramas, and Hollywood action films. His most celebrated work includes the 1979 BBC miniseries ‘Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy’, an adaptation of the John le Carré novel starring Alec Guinness, which won multiple BAFTA awards and received an Emmy nomination.

His filmography also features notable titles such as the Vietnam War film ‘Hamburger Hill’, ‘The Dogs of War’, ‘Raw Deal’ starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, and the horror film ‘Ghost Story’ featuring Fred Astaire. Irvin began his career in the 1960s with documentaries, including ‘Inheritance’, which earned him a BAFTA. He was a graduate of the London Film School and was known for his ability to work with a diverse range of actors, from Fred Astaire to Patrick Swayze.
