FIMI adopts new AI eligibility rules for music charts

FIMI, the Italian Federation of the Recorded Music Industry, has adopted new principles to regulate the eligibility of recordings created using generative artificial intelligence for inclusion in official music charts. These guidelines aim to establish a clear distinction between human-led creativity and purely synthetic works or those generated by unauthorized AI models.

The decision follows the suspension of the track ‘Dimanche Midi Pile’ by the artist Gisèle from the Top of the Music by FIMI/Niq charts and radio rotation on RTL 102.5, Radio Zeta, and Radiofreccia. The track was flagged due to suspicions regarding its AI-generated nature and the lack of clarity regarding the artist's identity.

Under the new framework, supported by major labels including Sony Music, Universal Music Group, and Warner Music Group, AI-assisted tracks must meet three primary criteria to be eligible for charts: they must use authorized and legal AI services, be substantially created by a human, and show no signs of fraudulent stream manipulation. The policy also seeks to address the issue of bots used to artificially inflate listenership numbers.
