Fin whales spotted off the Pembrokeshire coast
A survey trip conducted by Sea Trust Wales has resulted in the rare sighting of up to a dozen fin whales off the coast of Pembrokeshire. The encounter occurred approximately 26 miles offshore during a voyage aboard the Cartlet Lady, departing from Milford Haven.
Observers reported seeing at least six to eight whales feeding within a quarter-mile radius, with the total number potentially reaching twelve. The fin whales, which are the second-largest marine mammals on Earth and are listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), were estimated to be about 60 feet long.
In addition to the whales, the group witnessed significant marine activity, including pods of dolphins bow riding the whales and shoals of tuna.
