Financial Crimes Commission investigates potential data leak

Investigators are probing a potential leak within the Financial Crimes Commission (FCC) after highly confidential documents were discovered on the mobile phone of Steven Moothoocurpen. Moothoocurpen, who was arrested in connection with a suspected Rs 75.9 million drug trafficking and money laundering case, is facing charges of conspiracy to obstruct justice.

The recovered data includes intelligence-gathering details, information on ongoing investigations, and files regarding former suspects. Notably, a comparative analysis revealed that one document, a request for a Chamber Judge order, was fabricated. Investigators are working to determine if Moothoocurpen created the forgery or if an official within the FCC provided it.

The leak also included photos of the homes of several FCC investigators and the Director General, Sanjay Dawoodarry. Dawoodarry reported receiving a threatening letter accompanied by bullets at his residence, an incident that occurred shortly after Moothoocurpen was seen near his home. The FCC is currently conducting an internal investigation to identify any officials involved in the unauthorized disclosure of sensitive information.
