Financial difficulties affect BHV and KFC franchisee in France
Major retail and food service entities in France are facing judicial proceedings due to financial instability.
The Paris Economic Activities Tribunal is set to decide whether the historic department store BHV will enter court-ordered reorganization. The decision carries significant weight for the 700 employees at its Parly 2 site. Management and staff representatives are seeking a reorganization procedure to avoid a more abrupt closure and to allow for a potential recovery plan. The company has acknowledged it is in a state of bankruptcy, despite previous claims to the contrary. The proceedings follow concerns raised by the labor inspectorate regarding potential insolvency, as well as reports of unpaid social security contributions and building safety issues.
Separately, approximately 900 employees across nearly 40 KFC restaurants are facing uncertainty following the filing for safeguard proceedings by one of the brand’s major franchisees. While the safeguard procedure is designed to protect companies facing difficulties before they reach total insolvency, it has created significant concern regarding the continuity of operations and job security. The procedure allows for a period of judicial observation to reorganize activities and seek financial solutions without necessitating immediate closures or layoffs.
