Kakao Pay and Kakao Bank partner with Fireblocks for digital assets

Kakao Pay and Kakao Bank have signed a memorandum of understanding with Fireblocks to explore the development of digital asset infrastructure in South Korea. The partnership focuses on evaluating distribution frameworks for digital assets, with a specific emphasis on stablecoins.

The collaboration aims to conduct proof-of-concept tests tailored to South Korea’s specific regulatory and security requirements. While the agreement does not commit to a specific service launch or the issuance of a won-denominated stablecoin, it seeks to establish secure on-chain infrastructure for the country’s emerging digital asset market.

This move follows a previous agreement between Kakao Group and Circle to explore blockchain-based payment infrastructure. The initiative is part of a broader trend among South Korean financial institutions to prepare for future digital asset regulations and institutional-grade custody and settlement services.
