Financial guidelines for emergency funds and cash reserves

Financial experts and institutions provide varying recommendations for maintaining emergency reserves to ensure security during income loss or geopolitical instability.

For long-term stability, a common guideline is to maintain a financial cushion covering 3 to 6 months of essential living expenses, such as housing, food, transport, and healthcare. The specific amount depends on individual needs, such as whether a household relies on a single income or has irregular earnings.

Regarding immediate liquidity, institutions suggest keeping small amounts of physical cash for short-term emergencies. The European Central Bank, following models from countries like the Netherlands and Austria, suggests having 70 to 100 euros per person to cover basic needs for at least three days. In Denmark, Danmarks Nationalbank recommends at least 250 kroner per person. In Poland, estimates suggest keeping 300 to 500 PLN per person for a few days of security. Additionally, experts recommend holding payment cards from at least two different providers, such as Visa and Mastercard, to mitigate the risk of technical failures.
