Financial institutions advance strategic shifts in Botswana
Financial institutions in Botswana are advancing strategic shifts to support and participate in the nation's economic landscape. Absa Group has reaffirmed its commitment to Botswana’s economic development through a visit by Group Executive for Africa Regions, Charles Russon, to meet with Minister of State President Moeti Mohwasa. The discussions focused on the role of public-private partnerships in fostering sustainable growth and creating business opportunities.
Separately, Letshego Africa Holdings has revived its bid for a commercial banking license in Botswana, an ambition the group had abandoned seven years ago. CEO Reinette van der Merwe stated that the application is part of a broader strategy to rely more heavily on deposits, payments, and digital financial services to fund growth locally. This move follows a strategic decision by Letshego to reduce its footprint from eleven countries to six, concentrating its capital on markets where it can achieve greater scale.
