Financial institutions and analysts scrutinize AI investment returns
BNY Mellon CFO McDonogh is implementing strict capital discipline regarding artificial intelligence investments. He emphasized that AI must be treated as a tool to measurably reduce costs or improve earnings rather than an end in itself. Under this approach, every model and vendor contract must meet specific return on investment (ROI) hurdles to prevent budget increases based on speculation.
Simultaneously, Citi is evaluating the sustainability of AI demand for Super Micro Computer. While the company has raised its first-quarter revenue guidance for fiscal year 2027 to between $18.5 billion and $19.5 billion due to strong demand for AI platforms, analysts are looking for evidence that this high level of business is durable.
In related developments, Argentum AI, a cloud provider supported by Super Micro, is reportedly negotiating a $5 billion private loan to fund additional AI chips for a data center in Poland. This facility would serve customers without investment-grade ratings.
