Financial institutions shift focus from data collection to integrated intelligence

The financial services industry is shifting from simple data collection toward integrated intelligence to better understand customer behavior. Rather than merely accumulating information, institutions are focusing on the ability to connect fragmented signals—such as transaction patterns and login attempts—to make real-time decisions regarding risk and service.

At Axis Bank, the application of AI and data is being balanced with the need for customer choice and strict data governance. Prasad Lad, Group Head of the Business Intelligence Unit at Axis Bank, emphasizes that while aggregated data can be used for organizational analysis, individual-level decisions require explicit customer consent and rigorous oversight.

There is a noted distinction between the use of machine learning and generative AI in banking. Machine learning models used for credit eligibility and fraud detection are typically deterministic and undergo extensive testing, whereas the probabilistic nature of generative AI necessitates a ‘human-in-the-loop’ approach to ensure responsible decision-making.
