Financial literacy and debt management trends in Mexico and Colombia

In Mexico, the National Commission for the Protection and Defense of Users of Financial Services (Condusef) has launched the 19th edition of the National Financial Education Week (SNEF) 2026. Held in Mexico City from October 15 to 18 at the Monument to the Revolution, the event offers free workshops, lectures, and interactive exhibits. The program aims to teach citizens about savings planning, responsible credit use, retirement preparation, and fraud prevention.

In Colombia, analysis from Asobancaria highlights the complexities of debt repayment. While many citizens aim to be reliable payers, economic instability and high informality rates—affecting 55.7% of workers nationally—often lead to payment delays. Data indicates that when income fails to cover expenses, many individuals turn to informal loans rather than formal credit, driven by a combination of economic capacity and behavioral biases such as present-bias impulsivity.
