Financial management trends and marital satisfaction in the US
Research and census data highlight the varying approaches married couples take toward managing household finances. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, over 40% of married individuals prefer to manage their finances jointly, while 30% use a combination of joint and separate accounts, and 20% maintain entirely separate finances.
A 2023 study published in the Journal of Consumer Research suggests that couples sharing bank accounts may experience higher levels of happiness due to a sense of teamwork and collaboration, which can reduce the likelihood of separation. Jenny Olson, an associate professor of marketing at Indiana University, noted that joint accounts can foster a feeling of unity within a marriage.
However, trends show that younger generations are increasingly opting to keep assets separate to protect individual savings or inheritances, a departure from the habits of Generation X and Baby Boomers.
