Financial markets see REIT evaluation shifts and digital bond repo success

Financial market developments include new methodologies for evaluating Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) and advancements in digital bond settlements.

For REIT investors, traditional metrics like earnings per share (EPS) and net income may be less reliable due to the impact of depreciation. Because depreciation is recorded as an expense without affecting cash flow, experts suggest using Funds from Operations (FFO) to better assess performance and dividend reliability. REITs, which own or finance income-producing real estate, are traded on major exchanges such as the NYSE and NASDAQ.

In the digital asset space, a digital bond backed by U.S. Treasuries successfully collateralized a repurchase agreement (repo) in under 10 minutes. The transaction utilized atomic settlement, a process where all parts of a trade occur simultaneously to reduce counterparty risk and improve liquidity. The arrangement also involved bankruptcy-remote custody to protect assets from a custodian's creditors and a perfected security interest to ensure legal priority in the event of default.
