Gold prices plunge following hawkish Fed signals from Kevin Warsh

Global gold prices experienced a sharp decline on August 29, 2026, dropping over 3% to approximately 4,454 USD per ounce. This downturn followed a hawkish speech by Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh at the Jackson Hole Economic Symposium. Warsh emphasized that the Fed remains committed to its 2% inflation target, stating that the central bank still has “work to do” if inflation does not return to that level clearly and quickly.

His remarks led markets to reassess interest rate trajectories, with the probability of a Fed rate hike in September rising significantly from roughly 35% to nearly 60%. The strengthening US dollar and rising Treasury yields further pressured precious metals.

In Vietnam, domestic gold markets mirrored this volatility. SJC gold bar prices saw significant adjustments, with many major brands listing prices around 145.7 million VND for buying and 148.7 million VND for selling, representing a decrease of approximately 1.5 million VND per tael. Gold ring prices also faced downward pressure, with fluctuations varying by brand. While global prices fell, some domestic brands maintained higher premiums compared to international rates due to local supply and demand dynamics.
