Financial preparedness: Managing credit scores and emergency cash reserves

Financial experts and authorities are providing guidance on personal financial management and emergency preparedness.

Regarding creditworthiness, SCHUFA has implemented a scoring system ranging from 100 to 999 points as of March 17, 2026. This system utilizes twelve publicly viewable criteria to assess the likelihood of a consumer paying their bills. Understanding these factors is essential, as credit scores influence decisions by landlords, banks, and retailers. Consumer protection agencies note that many entries can be influenced once individuals become aware of what data is being stored.

In terms of emergency preparedness, civil protection experts recommend maintaining a cash reserve at home to mitigate risks during power outages, which can disable ATMs and digital payment systems. The Upper Austrian Civil Protection service suggests that each household should keep approximately 500 euros in small denominations. Experts advise finding secure hiding places for this cash to protect it from theft during burglaries.
