Financial pressure impacts US relationships and life milestones

The TD 2026 Love & Money Survey indicates that financial pressure is significantly impacting American relationships, family dynamics, and major life decisions. According to the findings, money remains a primary source of tension in personal lives, with 59 percent of respondents reporting feeling scared or embarrassed when discussing finances with a partner. Additionally, 42 percent stated that financial disagreements cause frequent or very frequent stress, and 30 percent have hidden financial decisions from those close to them.

Beyond interpersonal relationships, affordability challenges are causing many Americans to postpone significant life goals. Three-quarters of those surveyed reported delaying major milestones due to financial constraints. The most common delays include paying off debt (23 percent), traveling (21 percent), buying a car (17 percent), purchasing a home (17 percent), and saving for retirement (15 percent). Younger generations are reportedly experiencing the widest range of delays, including moving out of parental homes and starting families.
