Río Grande municipality claims over $18 billion in provincial debt
The municipality of Río Grande is demanding that the provincial government regularize a debt exceeding $18 billion in tax sharing funds (coparticipación). Local authorities, including the City Council and the Court of Accounts, have formed a working group to evaluate the impact of these delays, which can reach up to 60 days.
Municipal officials warn that the lack of predictable funding threatens essential public services, including water, sewage, healthcare facilities, public transport, and social assistance programs such as community kitchens and student scholarships. Approximately 80% of the city's income is derived from national and provincial tax sharing.
In response, legislator Matías Lapadula announced plans to convene the Economy, Budget, and Finance Commission to push for the “Ley de Goteo Diario” (Daily Drip Law). This previously vetoed legislation proposes that municipal funds be transferred automatically as soon as they enter provincial accounts, aiming to reduce administrative delays and ensure financial predictability for local governments.
