Financial sector ETFs compared by geographic focus and diversification
Financial sector exchange-traded funds (ETFs) offer investors varying levels of geographic exposure, diversification, and yield.
In the international and U.S. banking space, the iShares MSCI Europe Financials ETF (EUFN) provides exposure to developed European financial institutions, including retail banks and insurers, with a 3.9% dividend yield. In contrast, the Invesco KBW Bank ETF (KBWB) focuses on a concentrated portfolio of U.S.-based banks with a 1.9% dividend yield. While KBWB has a lower expense ratio of 0.35% compared to EUFN's 0.49%, EUFN offers broader international diversification.
For U.S.-centric financial exposure, the Vanguard Financials ETF (VFH) and the State Street Financial Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLF) represent different strategies. XLF tracks the Financial Select Sector Index, limiting its holdings to companies within the S&P 500, such as JPMorgan Chase and Berkshire Hathaway. VFH tracks the MSCI US Investable Market Index, providing broader diversification by including mid- and small-cap financial companies across 428 stocks. VFH offers a 1.67% dividend yield, slightly higher than XLF's 1.42%, while XLF maintains a marginally lower expense ratio of 0.08% compared to VFH's 0.09%.
