Financial strategies for protecting savings against inflation

Financial specialists emphasize that keeping savings static can erode purchasing power due to inflation. To protect value and generate returns, individuals are encouraged to explore various savings and investment options.

A study by the Office of the Financial Consumer (OCF) in Costa Rica, conducted between June and July 2026, found that over 90% of surveyed adults consider saving for the future important, with 50% of households managing to save monthly. Common goals include retirement preparation (29%) and establishing emergency funds (28%). However, challenges remain: 71% of respondents believe higher income would allow for more savings, 51% cite unexpected expenses as a primary difficulty, and 47% note that debt limits their capacity to save.

One specific tool for managing funds not needed immediately is the fixed-term deposit (plazo fijo). This financial product involves depositing money into a bank for a set period—such as three, six, or 12 months—in exchange for a predetermined interest rate. Unlike immediate-access savings accounts, fixed-term deposits require funds to remain subject to agreed conditions for the duration of the contract, making them suitable for those with defined long-term financial goals.
