Financial stress impacts UK worker productivity and engagement
Recent research indicates that financial pressures are significantly affecting the UK workforce, impacting productivity, motivation, and retention. A survey of 2,000 adults commissioned by Hymans Robertson Personal Wealth found that 67 percent of employees reported money worries affecting their productivity, a notable increase from 38 percent in 2025. Additionally, 68 percent stated that financial concerns negatively impacted their motivation or engagement, while 37 percent reported taking time off due to financial pressures.
Complementary findings from an LCP survey of 10,000 workers echoed these trends, with 57 percent stating financial concerns have affected their work. The study highlighted broader consequences, noting that 45 percent of respondents felt they could not perform their jobs properly and 43 percent reported a negative effect on their workplace behavior. Furthermore, 39 percent indicated that financial stress led to increased consumption of alcohol, nicotine, or other substances.
As a result of these difficulties, approximately one-third of workers are considering taking on a second job. While 54 percent of workers have access to employer-provided financial wellbeing support, studies suggest much of this assistance may not meet individual needs, with many employees seeking guidance more closely linked to major life events like home ownership or parenthood.
