FINAS moves to prevent film industry cartels and announces 2026 funding

The National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS) is taking steps to address concerns regarding film distribution monopolies and ensure fair competition within the local industry. CEO Datuk Azmir Saifuddin Mutalib stated that the agency intends to meet with industry players to prevent the formation of cartels that could hinder smaller production companies from accessing the market.

FINAS also highlighted the need for transparency in the scheduling of international film releases, noting that last-minute Hollywood announcements can disrupt the screening slots available for local Malay, Chinese, and Tamil language productions.

Additionally, applications for the 2026 Creative Content Fund (DKK) will open in September. The fund aims to support high-quality productions, the development of new intellectual property, and international co-productions, particularly within ASEAN. This initiative is part of the upcoming National Film Policy 2026-2035, which focuses on alternative financing, market access, and the integration of technology such as AI.
