Fincantieri Ancona: Second worker dies following shipyard accident
Kabir Mohidul, a 29-year-old Bangladeshi worker, has died following a workplace accident at the Fincantieri shipyard in Ancona, Italy. He succumbed to severe burns a month after the incident, which occurred on September 29 while he and a colleague were working in the double bottom of a cruise ship section.
The accident, involving a sudden flash fire, previously claimed the life of 55-year-old Tunisian worker Sofiane Boutraa. The Ancona Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation into manslaughter and negligent injury to determine the cause of the fire and whether combustible gases were present.
Labor unions, including Fiom Cgil, Fim Cisl, and Uilm, have criticized the shipyard's safety protocols and the subcontracting system. Sara Galassi, secretary of Fiom Cgil Ancona, announced the union's intention to join the legal proceedings as a civil party, noting that this marks the fourth death at Fincantieri facilities in three years.
