Fincantieri advances Italian naval programs with new submarine and patrol vessel milestones

Italy's naval defense programs have reached significant milestones with advancements in both surface and sub-surface vessel development.

At the Fincantieri shipyard in Muggiano, La Spezia, the keel was laid for the second of four U212 NFS (Near Future Submarine) units intended for the Italian Navy (Marina Militare). Managed by OCCAR, this program aims to replace the Nazario Sauro-class submarines. The second unit, to be named Pietro Calvi, is scheduled for delivery in 2030. These advanced submarines will feature lithium-ion propulsion batteries, an extended pressure hull, and enhanced combat information systems to improve silence and autonomy.

Separately, the Ugolino Vivaldi (P440), the first unit of the new generation Multi-Mission Patrol Vessel (PPX) program, successfully completed its first sea trials in the Gulf of La Spezia. This vessel is part of a four-unit program designed to replace the Cassiopea-class Offshore Patrol Vessels. The Ugolino Vivaldi is expected to be delivered to the Naval Fleet in 2027.
