Finland advances digital education and learning futures
Finland is advancing its education system through digital innovation and the study of learning futures. The Learning Futures conference, organized in cooperation with the Finnish National Agency for Education, provides a multidisciplinary platform to discuss how futures studies can rethink learning and knowledge diffusion.
Research into Finland’s digital education highlights a strategic integration of ICT as a transversal competence within the national curriculum. Key components include a phenomenon-based learning model, a national network of approximately 2,300 tutor teachers, and upcoming 2025 national AI guidelines for education. While infrastructure is robust, with 99% of schools possessing broadband access, challenges persist regarding the gap between basic digital tool usage and deep digital pedagogy, as well as regional disparities between urban and rural areas.
