Finland airline authorities warn of rising power‑bank packing errors

Finnish aviation regulators and airlines report a seasonal increase in packing mistakes involving spare batteries and electronic cigarettes. Each year, roughly 34,000–36,000 power banks are removed from checked luggage in Finland, with higher numbers during the summer and holiday periods. The risk arises when lithium‑ion cells are damaged, short‑circuit, overheat or ignite.

Finavia, Finnair and the Transport Safety Agency (Traficom) stress that spare power sources and e‑cigarettes must be carried in hand baggage only, limited to two units per passenger and a maximum of 100 Wh each, in line with a new ICAO rule effective from April. Passengers are urged to double‑check their bags before checkout to avoid inadvertent placement of prohibited items, which are routinely confiscated at airports.
