Finland and Israel extend defense cooperation until 2034

Finland and Israel have signed a memorandum of understanding to extend defense material cooperation for a ten-year period, lasting until 2034. This extension is an exception to previous five-year terms. The agreement, which was proposed by Finland in early 2024 while the conflict in Gaza was ongoing, includes the establishment of a joint coordination group.

Finnish Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen stated that the continuation of cooperation is not surprising, noting that Finland has a long history of procuring defense materials from Israel, including systems such as the David's Sling air defense system. He emphasized that Finland maintains similar cooperation agreements with 40 different countries.

The decision has drawn sharp criticism from political opponents. Sofia Virta, chair of the Green League, described the government's Israel policy as a “historical shame.” She criticized the National Coalition Party for deepening ties with Israel through long-term defense cooperation while simultaneously failing to show political will to recognize Palestine or reduce dependencies on Israel.
