Finland and Italy call for NATO unity amid Trump criticism at Ankara summit

Finland’s foreign minister Elina Valtonen told CNN that NATO members must remain calm despite U.S. President Donald Trump’s complaints about countries that do not meet the 5 % defence‑spending target. Valtonen reiterated Finland’s commitment to the 5 % goal, noting that the country joined NATO in 2023 after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, speaking after the NATO summit in Ankara, stressed the alliance’s unity and Italy’s intention to meet its defence‑spending commitments in a sustainable way. She reiterated that Italy will not take part in any attacks on Iran, continues to support Ukraine, and highlighted concerns about the concentration of strategic raw materials in one country.
