Finland and Sweden restore cross-border rail connection

Finland and Sweden have restored their cross-border passenger rail connection after nearly four decades. The service, which resumed on August 10, 2026, operates between Oulu, Tornio, and Haparanda.

The new route is operated by the Finnish state railway company VR, providing 28 weekly services. While freight transport has continued to use the border infrastructure, regular passenger services had been suspended since 1988. The restored link features electrified infrastructure, updated station facilities, and a bilateral regulatory framework to facilitate operations.

Travelers moving from Oulu to Stockholm can now utilize this connection, though the journey involves multiple transfers, including buses and different train operators. The reopening aims to enhance mobility between northern Finland, northern Sweden, and the broader Scandinavian region.
