Finland approves 60 million euro fuel support package
The Finnish government has reached an agreement on a 60 million euro fuel support package to address rising fuel prices. The package is divided into three main components: 30 million euros for fuel support in the transport and agricultural sectors, 20 million euros for a permanent reduction in the basic vehicle tax, and 10 million euros to increase the upper limit of the commuter tax deduction.
Funding for the package is expected to come from 40 million euros in unused carbon sink funds and 20 million euros from basic road maintenance. While industry groups like SKAL and Suomen Yrittäjät have expressed gratitude for the relief to the transport sector, they have called for more permanent solutions, such as the introduction of professional diesel.
Opposition leaders, including SDP Vice Chair Niina Malm, have criticized the package as insufficient for wage earners. Malm noted that the 10 million euro investment in commuter tax deductions is modest and that the increase in the vehicle tax reduction may be offset by the return of the deductible to 900 euros, potentially increasing costs for many commuters.
