Finland begins field hunting for Brant and Canada geese

Field hunting for Brant geese and Canada geese begins on Monday, August 10, in Finland. The primary objective of this timed hunting season is to prevent crop damage caused by large flocks of geese while sustainably managing wildlife populations.

According to Marko Svensberg, a special planner at the Finnish Wildlife Agency, the goal is to direct hunting pressure toward areas where birds cause damage, such as fields awaiting harvest, rather than weakening the overall population.

For Canada geese, hunting is permitted across the entire country from August 10 until August 20 at 12:00. For Brant geese, hunting is restricted to coastal fields used for commercial crops or livestock feed and is only permitted from August 10 until August 20 at 12:00. Brant geese remain protected in inland areas.

Specific regulations include a daily quota of two Brant geese per hunter and a prohibition on using food decoys. General waterfowl hunting for both species on water bodies will commence on August 20 at 12:00.
