Finland campaigns for UN Security Council seat

Finland is campaigning for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2029–2030 term. Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen officially launched the campaign in New York on June 8, following Germany's recent failure to secure a seat.

President Alexander Stubb is scheduled to deliver a speech at the UN General Assembly regarding the bid. Experts from the development organization Fingo suggest the campaign should focus on consistency in international law, partnership, and decision-making inclusivity to appeal to the Global South.

Concerns have been raised regarding the funding of multilateral systems. Finland's development cooperation as a percentage of GNI has decreased, with estimates suggesting a drop from 0.44 percent in 2025 to 0.35 percent this year. Analysts note that the UN faces a liquidity crisis and budget cuts, highlighting that the effectiveness of international institutions depends heavily on reliable financial commitments from member states.
