Finland Closes Airspace and Limits Maritime Traffic Near Russia Over Drone Threat
Finland temporarily closed a sector of its airspace and imposed restrictions on maritime traffic along its southern coast near the Russian border on July 28. The precaution was taken because Ukrainian military drones, aimed at Russian targets, have occasionally strayed into the airspace of Finland and other NATO Baltic states.
A Finnish defence spokesperson said the steps are intended to ensure authorities can act safely if drones enter the region, while the army declined to disclose the source of the intelligence, describing it as operational information. NATO members have warned that Russian electronic interference can divert Ukrainian drones into NATO airspace, and Moscow accuses Ukraine of deliberately steering them toward NATO borders. No injuries or damage were reported. The measures follow similar short‑term closures earlier in the year and reflect Finland’s heightened security posture as a NATO member sharing a long border with Russia.
