Finland completes 200-km border fence with Russia
Finland has completed the construction of a 200-kilometer security barrier along strategic sections of its 1,340-kilometer border with Russia. The project, which cost approximately 356 million euros, features a 4.5-meter-high fence equipped with advanced technical surveillance, including cameras and sensors, alongside patrol roads and cleared zones.
The initiative was driven by heightened security concerns following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and a surge of over 1,300 undocumented migrants in 2023. Finnish authorities have accused Moscow of conducting ‘hybrid warfare’ by instrumentalizing migration to destabilize the country. While the situation is currently described as calm but tense, Interior Minister Mari Rantanen emphasized the need for constant preparedness.
Finland, which joined NATO in April 2023, is seeking additional European Union funding to extend the barrier across the remainder of its eastern frontier. The land border crossings with Russia have remained largely closed since December 2023.
