Finland conducts first explosive shelter tests in 30 years

Finland has conducted its first explosive tests on civil protection shelters in over 30 years. The exercises took place in the Rovaniemi region, approximately 100 kilometers from the Russian border, to evaluate the durability of the nation's shelter infrastructure against modern warfare threats.

The Finnish Ministry of the Interior stated that the goal of the action was to develop the national civil protection system, apply lessons learned from the conflict in Ukraine, and strengthen international cooperation. The tests were observed by experts from other European nations.

Finland maintains an extensive civil defense network, consisting of approximately 50,500 shelters with a total capacity for about 4.8 million people. This system, which includes underground parking lots, schools, and hospitals, is considered one of the most advanced in the world. The country, which joined NATO in 2023, has intensified its security preparations following the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.
