Finland develops zero-emission argon engine and smartphone repurposing tech

Researchers at the University of Vaasa's engine laboratory are developing an argon engine designed to eliminate CO2 emissions. The project, which began in late 2024, utilizes a mixture of argon and oxygen to replace combustion air. When fueled by hydrogen, the combustion process produces only water as a byproduct. The system aims to recycle argon after each cycle to ensure sustainability. Initial testing of the prototype engine is scheduled to begin in late 2027.

Separately, the Finnish startup Supersight has developed a way to repurpose used smartphones for measuring human and traffic flows. The technology, which originated from an internal research project at telecommunications operator Elisa, uses 3D-printed enclosures to house the hardware required for these measurements.
