Finland donates 10 diesel locomotives to Ukraine

Finland has agreed to donate 10 Dv12 class diesel locomotives and a package of spare parts to Ukraine’s state railway, Ukrzaliznytsia. The equipment, valued at approximately €2.1 million, is being retired from service by the Finnish state operator VR.

The donation agreement was signed on October 22 in Kyiv by Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi and Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo during the Ukraine–Finland Business Forum. To facilitate the transfer, VR-Group Plc approved a capital return that moves ownership of the locomotives to the Finnish State, which will then donate them to Ukraine.

The Dv12 locomotives are capable of both freight and passenger transport and can operate independently of electric rail lines. While the specific delivery date has not been announced, the locomotives are currently operational. The Finnish Prime Minister’s Office noted that the donation will not affect VR’s domestic services in Finland.
