Finland electric vehicle registrations surpass gasoline cars

Finland is experiencing a historic shift in the automotive market, as fully electric vehicles (EVs) surpassed gasoline cars in new registrations this year. By the end of August, the share of electric vehicles in new car registrations reached 52 percent, significantly higher than the EU average of 21 percent recorded in the first half of the year.

This rapid transition is partly driven by rising fuel prices following geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East, including military operations in Iran and tensions between Saudi Arabia and Houthi rebels. While the total number of EVs in use has exceeded 200,000, they still represent only 7.3 percent of the total passenger car fleet.

As the market grows, insurance company Turva has issued warnings regarding new risks associated with EV ownership. Experts emphasize that charging infrastructure is a critical safety factor, advising against using standard home sockets for long-term charging. Instead, they recommend professional installation of dedicated charging points to prevent hazards, particularly in residential housing companies.
