Finland expands free chickenpox vaccination to adults

Starting August 10, 2026, Finland is expanding its national vaccination program to include free varicella (chickenpox) vaccinations for adults aged 20 to 50. This expansion follows guidelines from the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL).

The vaccine is available to individuals in this age group who have not previously had chickenpox or have not received two doses of the vaccine. Most adults in Finland have already acquired lifelong immunity through childhood infection. However, the program targets specific groups, including healthcare workers and individuals about to begin immunosuppressive treatments.

Regional wellbeing services, such as those in Satakunta and North Savo, are implementing the rollout. Residents can assess their need for vaccination through digital services, phone consultations, or direct appointments at primary healthcare centers. The Varivax vaccine is being utilized for the program.
