Finland expands free varicella vaccine to adults aged 20‑50

From 1 August, Finland’s national vaccination programme will offer a free varicella (chickenpox) vaccine to all adults aged 20 to 50 who have no prior immunity. The change targets the small fraction of the adult population – estimated at 1‑3 % – that has never been infected or vaccinated. Eligibility includes people planning pregnancy, those about to start strong immunosuppressive treatment, and healthcare workers. The standard two‑dose schedule will be administered at least three months apart.

The rollout begins in the South Savonia Eloisa health district, where the expanded offer will be coordinated through existing primary‑care and student‑health services. Children’s routine varicella vaccinations for 1½‑ and 6‑year‑olds remain unchanged.
