Finland faces calls for national strategies to improve immigrant integration

To ensure successful immigrant integration, Finland must respond nationally to both existing and foreseeable challenges. Key priorities include minimizing barriers to learning Finnish or Swedish and promoting an understanding of Finnish values through new forms of guidance.

There is a stated desire to avoid the social segregation and ‘ghettos’ observed in Sweden and the United Kingdom, which are viewed as breeding grounds for extremist ideologies. To prevent such outcomes, legislative changes are suggested to foster genuine integration.

Proposed measures include reviewing housing and income support practices. Specifically, modifying the criteria for Kela-paid benefits could encourage more balanced residential distribution. For instance, increasing support for those moving to areas experiencing population loss might motivate immigrants to settle in diverse locations, rather than concentrating in specific ethnic enclaves.
