Finland faces declining PISA scores and educational challenges

Recent PISA results indicate a continuing decline in learning outcomes in Finland, with a particularly sharp drop in literacy skills. While previous declines were attributed to the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, experts suggest that current trends require more fundamental policy shifts.

Discussions regarding the decline highlight several contributing factors. These include the impact of digital devices on classroom concentration, the challenges faced by immigrant students with language proficiency, and the difficulties of the inclusion model in general education. Some educators have noted that a lack of Finnish language skills among certain students has even required instruction to be conducted in English.

To combat these trends, there are calls for increased resources and a return to printed learning materials. Proponents argue that physical books improve reading comprehension and focus compared to digital reading, which can be fragmented. While the Finnish government has implemented measures such as banning smart devices during lessons and increasing funding for learning support, some stakeholders argue that more significant investments in early childhood education and pedagogical resources are necessary.
