Finland faces economic crisis as border closure with Russia is extended

Finland is facing significant economic challenges due to the prolonged closure of its border with Russia. Local experts, including Jauri Varvikko of the NGO Naapuriseura, report that the country is losing approximately one billion euros annually, primarily due to the loss of Russian tourists. This has led to high unemployment in eastern Finnish cities like Imatra, severely impacting the tourism, retail, hospitality, and spa sectors which were historically designed around cross-border trade.

In response to these economic pressures, Finnish authorities have decided to extend the border closure until December 31, 2028, following a proposal from the Ministry of the Interior.

In a related security development, Sweden has announced plans to deploy aircraft and warships this autumn to assist Finland in patrolling its land and maritime borders with Russia. This move follows Finland's integration into NATO and its increased military readiness. While Swedish units may operate under Finnish command if necessary, the deployment marks a significant shift in regional security dynamics as Nordic nations strengthen their collective defense posture.
