Finland faces uncertainty over hobby vehicle recycling regulations

New regulatory interpretations regarding the EU’s End-of-Life Vehicles (ELV) regulation are causing concern among Finnish automotive enthusiasts. There is uncertainty regarding whether vehicles classified as cultural or historical assets will be subject to mandatory recycling requirements if they do not meet specific official criteria.

In Finland, there are approximately 500,000 motor vehicles in hobby use. The Finnish Automobile Historical Association (SAHK), the Ministry of Transport and Communications, the Ministry of the Environment, and Traficom have held discussions to adapt the ELV regulation into Finnish legislation. While the EU regulation has been softened since its implementation in August, enthusiasts fear that national interpretations could lead to increased bureaucracy or the forced scrapping of hobby projects and historical vehicles.
