Finland forecasts record pea harvest and rye shortage for 2026

Finland's second crop estimate for 2026 indicates a record-breaking pea harvest, expected to exceed 140 million kilograms. This represents the largest yield in the history of statistical tracking and is more than five times the amount produced ten years ago, following a fourfold increase in pea cultivation area.

Total grain production is estimated at 3.2 billion kilograms. While wheat and oat yields are expected to rise nearly 10% above the ten-year average, rye production is projected to be scarce at approximately 62 million kilograms, which is insufficient to meet annual demand. The shortage may be addressed through existing stocks or imports.

Rapeseed and canola yields are also expected to recover, with an estimate of over 90 million kilograms, returning to five-decade average levels after several years of low yields. Potato outlooks remain positive at over 620 million kilograms, though recent autumn rains may impact final quality and quantity.
