Finland implements new digital maritime navigation technology

Finland is becoming one of the first countries to implement new maritime technology designed to standardize digital information for safer navigation. Fintraffic has developed a distribution service that transmits maritime warnings using the international S-124 data model.

This new system aims to make maritime data more uniform and easier to utilize across different platforms. As S-100-compliant ship equipment becomes more common, these warnings can be shared directly with vessel navigation systems, significantly speeding up the delivery of safety-critical information. By 2029, new vessels will be required to support these standards. The implementation allows for better data targeting, enabling crews to select specific information layers for their electronic charts.
