Finland implements winter and dark season speed limits
The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency has announced the transition to winter and dark season speed limits on highways. The primary changeover date is Wednesday, October 28, with all limits to be updated by Friday, October 30. Regional decisions regarding these seasonal restrictions are made by local centers of vitality.
On main roads, speed limits will primarily be reduced to 80 km/h, with some sections dropping to 70 km/h. On motorways, limits will decrease to 100 km/h. However, Fintraffic may maintain a 120 km/h limit on motorways until the end of November if weather conditions and specific road safety requirements allow.
These measures aim to mitigate increased accident risks caused by darkness and slippery conditions. Experts note that driving in darkness can double accident risks, while slippery roads can multiply them. The seasonal limits are expected to remain in effect until early April.
