Finland installs emergency oil spill barriers in Gulf of Finland

Finland is installing permanent rock anchors in the Gulf of Finland to facilitate the rapid deployment of pollution barriers in the event of an oil spill. Workers are currently drilling into cliffs on islands located less than 100 kilometers from the Russian border. The project aims to install 350 anchoring points in the eastern part of the Gulf, with potential future expansion along the entire southern Finnish coast.

The Finnish Coast Guard reports an increased risk of a major oil catastrophe due to several factors: the presence of the Russian ‘shadow fleet’ of tankers, navigation system issues (GNSS), and Ukrainian drone attacks targeting Russian oil ports. Between five and ten large crude oil tankers transit the narrow, shallow route daily to facilitate Russian exports despite Western sanctions.

Environmental experts from the John Nurminen Foundation warn that a spill could devastate rare local plant and animal species, particularly if it occurs during critical nesting seasons.
