Finland investigates suspected break-ins at MPs' homes
Finnish authorities have launched a preliminary investigation into a series of suspected break-ins and attempted intrusions at the homes of members of parliament in the Helsinki area. The incidents, which reportedly began approximately one year ago, have targeted fewer than 20 lawmakers.
Investigators noted that while there were no signs of forced entry and no items were stolen or damaged, several subtle anomalies were observed. These included doors being left open or interior lights being switched on when they had previously been turned off. Parliament Speaker Jussi Halla-aho noted that these recurring signs may have been left intentionally.
Prime Minister Petteri Orpo stated that the involvement of a foreign power is a “very possible” explanation, citing concerns regarding election interference and efforts to destabilize Finland. President Alexander Stubb characterized the intrusions as an “attack on democracy.” The investigation is being led by the Helsinki Police Department in coordination with the National Bureau of Investigation.
