Finland investigates suspected Russian airspace violation

Finland's Ministry of Defense suspects a Russian aircraft violated its airspace on Thursday afternoon in the western Gulf of Finland. The Finnish Border Guard has launched an investigation into the incident.

Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen stated that any suspected violation of airspace is taken seriously. This event follows similar suspected incursions in May and June involving Russian military aircraft near Porkkala and Porvoo, which previously led to the summoning of the Russian chargé d'affaires.

Major General Pekka Turunen, head of Finnish military intelligence, noted that the security situation has deteriorated since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. He specifically warned of an increasing risk of long-range drones drifting into Finnish territory due to intensified strikes in the Gulf of Finland region.
